The Madison Diocese has seen an uptick in the number of men studying to become priests and is seeking $30M to train them [4].
Business & Development
The City Council approved a large hotel near Capitol Square [5], over the concerns of preservationists [6]. Developers say a limit on tax credits for redevelopment of historical structures [7] in Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed budget could hinder work in Madison. The State Journal says that Madison, not the state budget, would be to blame [8] if projects like the Garver Feed Mill fell through. The Cap Times highlighted Madison’s potential for becoming a startup hub and its challenges [9]. Caffeinated Politics discusses a debate over preservation along Williamson Street [10].
Government
Mayor Paul Soglin and Ald. Scott Resnick will participate in a debate [11] tonight at the Madison Public Library Central Branch. The Cap Times wrote that they shouldn’t throw away the ideas of candidates that didn’t make it past the primary [12]. Richard Brown expressed surprise [13] he didn’t advance in the primary. Dane County is demanding that the company that operates a Waunakee manure digester comply with state regulations after multiple spills [14]. Members of Madison’s black community want greater input into the design of the proposed Dane County Jail [15].
