Is Madison like Austin? Also, coverage of local bands and Cinematheque

The hoarse, near-inhuman voice you hear screaming "MADISON IS NOT AUSTIN, FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!" may indeed be your own, if you're reading Madison Magazine's recent contribution to the "maybe Madison is kind of Austin sort of theoretically based on this tedious rationalization" discussion. You know, that theme that sort of ignores how Austin is more than twice as big as Madison by population, and that's only real among journalists and politicians? Yeah. Granted, Brennan Nardi does do a lot of reporting on Austin's business climate and so forth, but it's generally a flimsy dead horse of a premise, and the first nine paragraphs are framed around Garbage and then Richard Florida.

For coverage of local bands that are not Garbage (and thus are a tad more local), check out Jessica Steinhoff's Isthmus profile of TL:DR and Rock Of The Arts' interview with Lue Lueck of The Non' Travellin' Band.

Not to be all mean to ol' Madison Magazine; there is this report on the ambitiously conceived facilities of the Madison Music Foundry, and on founder Mike Olson's struggles to keep it open.

As Cinematheque's season opens back up, Rob Thomas knocks it out, previewing the Pierre Etaix series that began Thursday; Cetk's summer-long tribute to Roger Ebert; and Saturday's screening of To The Wonder.
