Festival celebrates South Madison

Most Thursdays, the South Madison farmer's market supplies the community with fresh food, arts, and crafts.

But on Sept. 22, it also provided area families an opportunity to celebrate the neighborhood.

With a variety of music and entertainment acts, the Celebrate South Madison Festival, brought community members together to do just that.

Established in 2009, the festival is sponsored by the South Metropolitan Planning Council, and occurs twice a year, in partnership with the farmer's market and a host of other area sponsors.

Park Street Partners chair, Ariel Kaufman, explained that the goal of the festival is to get residents involved with their community. She noted that the entertainment offered during Celebrate South Madison allowed a way for community members to interact and helped promote the neighborhood and its services.

Activities included face painting and science experiments for children, along with interactive and informational booths from area services. Families were able to taste test produce, build rockets, and sign up to participate in community programs.

The event also hosted musical acts including Yaya Kambaye, UW African Dance 277, Black Star Drumline, Capoeira Angola Madison, Son Mudanza, and La Otra Banda.
