Get biking: safety, etiquette and fun tips
With its extensive web of bike paths, hugging the shores of the lakes, weaving through campus and providing sublime views of the natural landscape, biking in Madison is easy, fun and efficient. And technically you don’t even have to be physically fit to enjoy it.
Pick your trail, choose your route and start spinning – in Madison it really is that easy. Don’t get ahead of yourself, though. Before you strap on that helmet, read Madison’s “10 Smart Rules to Bike Safety”:
- Wear a helmet: Recent studies show that wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce your risk of head injury by 85%. Helmets should be replaced immediately after accidents, and every two years even if you don’t have any incidents.
- Stay Visible: Make sure cars know where you are at all times. If drivers can see you, they are less likely to hit you. Also remember to wear reflective clothing when biking at night.
- Use Signals: Alert drivers where you’re going, by using basic hand signals. Don’t assume drivers are going to stop.
- Be Alert: Keep your eyes on the road, watch for small obstacles.
- Go with the Flow: Bike in the direction of the traffic; not against it.
- Be Predictable: Act like a car, don’t weave in and out of lanes – be safe.
- Tune in, not out: No cell phones, no iPods, just you and the traffic sounds.
- Obey all traffic laws: When you’re on the road, you’re a vehicle, too. DUIs apply to you, as do street signs and one-ways. Red light, stop sign, yield sign. Yes, you got it.
- Test before you quest: Comfortable seating? Air in the tires? Gears shifting? Brakes?
- Secure: Lock your bike and double-check everything.
