Madison Becomes State’s Third Certified Bee City
Madison is officially a certified Bee City.
In mid-April, Mayor Paul Soglin and Madison’s Common Council submitted a resolution and signed application for the city of Madison to become a certified Bee City USA affiliate. The resolution met the requirements, and Madison became the third certified Bee City USA affiliate in Wisconsin after starting the process earlier this year. The resolution requires the city to commit to maintaining a sustainable pollinator-friendly habitat.
Madison’s Food Policy Council has spent the last several years proposing and pushing initiatives to make Madison a leader in sustaining pollinator-friendly habitats.
Since 2013, the Madison Food Policy Council has adopted a new terrace treatment policy, created the Pollinator Protection Task Force who then authored a report on strategies to protect pollinator habitat within the city, signed onto the nationwide Mayor’s Monarch Pledge, and earned the title of Bee City USA affiliate.
Upon becoming a Bee City, the city of Madison can now display the Bee City USA logo and is listed on Bee City USA’s website as a contributor to sustaining pollinator-friendly habitat.
