Education
Latinos United for Education Scholarship fund was pleased to be able to award three more scholarships this year, reflecting the growth of their organization. UW - Madison’s incoming PEOPLE scholars attended a college and career readiness event at the White House. Edgewood College named a new Director of Education Administration. Madison’s School Board is considering going to referendum for more operating money. After medical school enrollment jumps, UW - Madison will pay more in scholarships. Hmong summer program will offer fall sessions as well.
Government and Police
The new Planning Division director is hopeful and excited for Madison’s future. Madison residents criticize Gov. Walker’s invitation-only listening sessions. Mayor Soglin joined with community organizers to announce a 15-point plan to reduce violence. Forward Lookout blogger Brenda Konkel says that Chief Koval’s new “The Police are the Public and the Public are the Police” ignores the serious issues with police violence and aggression. “Ease of control” is what made the difference between how officers reacted to two similar arrests. The Dane County District Attorney's office has hired a diversity recruitment specialist. The development company that will rehabilitate the Garver Feed Mill wants more time to secure financing. Madison issued a record number of building permits for apartment complexes in the first half of 2016.
Community
Madison-area Kate Bush fans gather for the Midwest’s first tribute to her cult-classic song “Wuthering Heights.” The 17th annual Dane Dances will bring a free music event every Friday night in August. “Highs and Lows” shows that, though Madison may lack the interesting topographical features or impressive skylines of other larger cities, there are still beautiful views to be seen. The line-up for Madison’s World Music festival has been announced. Activists are calling for the release of 350 inmates from Dane County Jail. Homeless youth struggle to find safe places to stay in Madison, and may fall victim to trafficking. Black Business Expo encouraged networking and support of black-owned businesses in Madison. The divisive Pyare Square Building is going to be demolished. The Dane County Fair opened at the Alliant Energy Center. Essay contest winners capture the magic of Opera in the Park. Ten protesters were arrested after blocking a major intersection for two hours. Major storm forced emergency and utility crews to work overnight. Proposed renovations to the East Towne and West Towne malls would make more room for movie theaters, pubs, and a Dave and Buster’s.
