Housing and homelessness

A cohousing project is planned for Winnebago street. Homelessness, littering and speeding are the most important concerns for citizens of the Greater Sandburg area. Mayor Soglin suggests that issues on State Street might decrease if people made an attempt to clean up their stuff. Mayor Soglin and the common council are embroiled in a debate over city budget priorities. Soglin plans to reintroduce an ordinance that would limit when people can sleep on downtown sidewalks, after the council rejected it.

Madison Neighborhoods

The State Journal continued with its profiles of Madison neighborhoods, doing SASY, Marquette, Spring Harbor, Nakoma, Eastmorland, Regent and Lerdahl Park. For the third year in a row, Soglin and the Common Council will debate the timing of planned large projects. A Bay Creek coffee shop was denied a permit for coffee roasting, much to the relief of the nearby residents. State of Downtown Madison report shows how housing, transportation and retail are changing. 

Community

Rhumba for Rainbow will raise money for The Rainbow Project’s programs for trauma survivors. Centro Hispano’s annual Fiesta is a celebration of Latin American culture. Madison’s Premiere Black Male Photo Shoot aims to promote a positive image of Black men in Madison. Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s Triennial Exhibit is bright and playful. Tunes at Monona Terrace is coming to an end due to a lack of sponsors. Literacy Network expands its class offerings to meet community needs. MMSD  might have resolved the contract issues that would keep uniformed police officers in schools. The east side YMCA temporarily closed after flooding.
