Local Government

The loss of Trek Bicycle’s sponsorship has forced the city to try and cut costs for the annual Ride the Drive. A new proposed ordinance would restrict moped parking. Another new proposed ordinance would impose a karaoke license charge for bars. Yet another proposed ordinance would limit late night food vendors in order to reduce lingering downtown after bar close. Dane County offers rent-free land for affordable housing developments on East Washington.

Business and Development

A new development near the West Towne Mall could bring around a thousand jobs to Madison. The potential redevelopment of the Garver Feed Mill is becoming more and more expensive. Development for the public market is well on its way. Plans for the renovation of John Doyle Square are being reconsidered. The Willy St. Co-op is considering another expansion.

Community

A desperately endangered species of honeybee was found alive and well at the UW arboretum. The Bayview Foundation is creating a huge mural for a building on the south side. A Japanese internment camp victim will give a talk on Tuesday. Places of worship in Madison are offering sanctuary for undocumented immigrants and their families. MMSD aims to fix all lead-tainted water fountains by the end of students’ summer break. Art Fair on the Square drew a large crowd of folks looking for unique finds. A program at the children’s museum is inspiring a new generation of “bioneers.”
