Souper Bowl raises $27,800 for Habitat for Humanity

Over 2,000 people attended the 16th annual Souper Bowl, a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity, held at West High School. Hosted by the University of Wisconsin chapter of Habitat for Humanity, the event helps the group raise money to build homes for Madison-area families.

Atendees could select a bowl made by local artisans and students from West and East high schools. Ticket purchases also included a meal of soup, salad and dessert donated by area restaurants.

The six hour event  included entertainment from local music groups, children’s activities, a pottery demonstration, a raffle, and a silent auction.

Souper Bowl has become so popular that this year, a shuttle was set up to take visitors from the UW campus to the event to make room for more parking.

“There was actually a line starting at 1:30 before the event started because people are so aware that we do it every year and the community is really supportive of it, ” said Habitat for Humanity member, Marybeth Falish.

“They’re always really surprised when they walk in to see how large it is and how much is going on,” she added.

The group raised a total of $27, 800 and sold over 1,000 bowls.

This year, the chapter is building a house off Park Street, for the Song Vang and Neng Cheng family.
