Bridging the Gap is an in-depth look at Madison’s racial academic achievement gap. This issue spans the city and touches almost every aspect of our community.

The causes of these academic inequalities run deep and need to be addressed. Many schools are actively seeking solutions. But how well can these efforts narrow a racial academic achievement gap that is now built into the system?

Read through this special report's in-depth coverage of Madison's achievement gap, where reporters focused on Leopold Elementary School to showcase what educators are doing to narrow race-based education gaps. We also looked at the Madison Metropolitan School District as a whole in addition to reporting on community programs with an education focus. Bridging the Gap is a special production of the Madison Commons. It evolved from an upper level reporting class of four students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UW–Madison.
