Unity picnic stresses finding common ground

Blacks, Latinos and all ethnicities are invited to come together and take part in the 5th annual Black Latino Unity Picnic, Sunday August 25 at Penn Park, sponsored by the Immigrant Workers Union (IWU).

The event will include discussion of political issues as well as entertainment.

Event coordinator Clarissa Pearson said the event aims to reduce tensions between the two communities. She said some of those issues are due to a lack of understanding between the groups.

“When you don’t associate with people on a regular basis on an individual level it becomes a challenge because its easier to do what you know rather than step out of your comfort zone,” Pearson said.

In an effort to ease any tensions, the IWU selected academic success as its topic of discussion in the community forum, because it views education as a cornerstone that unites both blacks and Latinos.

“(Education) has been an ongoing topic for both groups regarding (the achievement) gap and lack of staff of blacks and Latinos in the school district,” Pearson said. “In addition, both sides have the kids here that need to graduate and get a high school education and that is something all parents want.”

While important issues need to be addressed, the event will also have a fun, lively atmosphere as entertainers from both communities will be present such as Madison hip hop trio Introspective Prodigies, performing arts group Dances BoliviaManta, and DJ Movimiento.

Pearson hopes for a good turnout as a sign of solidarity for the entire community of Madison.

“We ask everyone comes with an open mind, a willingness to work together long term and have the viewpoint it’s not just their struggle but everyone’s,” she said.
