Welcome to the Madison Commons, a website designed to provide news and information about all of Madison's neighborhoods and a crossroads for the discussion of community issues. The name comes from the idea of a village commons, a place for news, talk, debate, and some entertainment, too, that's open to everyone.

Madison Commons is excited to launch our newest section: The Grid
The Grid will focus on neighborhood news and feature original reporting of how people are planning for and responding to Madison’s growth.
We’ll follow stories on the city’s changing workforce, real estate landscape and public transportation plans, for example. Because Madison’s growth shows no sign of slowing down and because there are so many different angles to cover as the city reacts, we feel these topics need their own section.
“Madison Commons was started 10 years ago to report on Madison’s neighborhoods and bring together community voices. Now those neighborhoods are changing quickly and it’s harder than ever to keep track. The Grid will be a place to find out what’s new, get the deeper stories, and give residents an opportunity to participate in the conversation,” said Lew Friedland, founder and publisher of Madison Commons and Vilas Distinguished Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
In addition to our core team, you’ll hear from citizen reporters and community members [2], including city planners, neighborhood advocates and everyday residents who provide their unique perspectives.
We’re also looking to hear your voice. If you are involved with a planning or development committee, or just think your neighbors need to be more informed about something happening in your area, we want to know.
