One of the many examples of the disconnect between public transportation and land use in Madison that has been disenfranchising transit-dependent people for years is the impending relocation of the state’s Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Service Centers on the west side. The new location will make it more accessible to car travel but less accessible to bus travel.

A planned reconstruction project for Madison's Atwood Avenue has sparked conversation among East Side residents, who see the initiative as an opportunity to improve safety conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

A public hearing on the proposed bus stop changes on Monroe Street was held last Wednesday evening in front of the Transit and Parking Commission, giving community members an opportunity to voice their opinions.

The hearing was called to gauge public concern about Metro’s proposal to consolidate and shift the bus stops along Monroe Street, resulting in a reduction of 6 stops along the corridor.

“I moved out of Chicago to come here to have a better life,” Nikki Johnson said as she watched her daughter color her favorite cartoon character.  

 

Johnson lives in a low-income apartment building with her two-year old daughter.

 

Johnson was in need of affordable housing quickly after her hours were cut at her job. She was trying to pay her $800 a month rent payment each month.

The Madison Community Foundation announced Tuesday their second of 12 major grants totaling roughly $1 million, this time turning their attention to Madison’s lakeside parks and beach conditions.

Back to the Beach, as the second initiative will be known, involves a partnership between MCF and Clean Lakes Alliance, according to an MCF statement. With the program the two organizations are looking to “reimagine Madison-area beaches.”
