The Madison Community Foundation announced Tuesday their second of 12 major grants totaling roughly $1 million, this time turning their attention to Madison’s lakeside parks and beach conditions.

Back to the Beach, as the second initiative will be known, involves a partnership between MCF and Clean Lakes Alliance, according to an MCF statement. With the program the two organizations are looking to “reimagine Madison-area beaches.”

Just as infections can spread throughout the body, an infection can also spread across a landscape. The equivalent of an ecosystem-sized pathogen is an invasive species. But when it comes to invasive zebra mussels infesting local lakes, early warning systems are not enough.

Usually when we encounter bees we worry about what they will do to us—sting us, crawl into our pop cans  or buzz around our homes while we crouch in the corner wielding a broomstick. However, in the city of Madison, bees are being recognized as an important part of the local ecology and urban agriculture.
