Madison’s Metro Transit needs a skeletal snow emergency plan. Our winters are harsh; we can have excessive snowfalls, and conditions are not always amenable to a “business as usual” format. So despite all our technology, there are simply times when we need a contingency plan, as during the recent blizzard of Thursday, Dec. 20. Fortunately, Wisconsin’s governor declared a state of emergency that day so all government offices, schools, and other enterprises uniformly shut down.

The Madison Metropolitan School District hired seven new teachers from Spain this year as part of its efforts to immerse students in the Spanish language.

Isabel Simonetti, the school district’s bilingual personnel analyst, said the decision stemmed from an insufficient number of certified bilingual teachers in the U.S.

Sometimes Santa Clause needs a little extra help gathering presents for all the children on his list.

Friday is the last day to contribute to the Salvation Army Toys for Tots drive. While donors won’t get milk and cookies – customary thanks for Saint Nick – they will help realize the Christmas wishes of children in Dane County.

This year the drive is behind in collections compared with last year’s donations, said Staff Sergeant Edward J. Vinogroski, Toy for Tots of Madison coordinator.
