The Madison Community Foundation announced Wednesday their third of 12 major gifts totaling roughly $1 million as a part of the organization’s 75th anniversary celebration, revealing their latest initiative from the rooftop of the Madison Children’s Museum.

The city of Madison will debut a new interactive map for bicyclists and pedestrians in late summer or early fall. The map is part of an effort to facilitate traffic and improve the channels for public feedback, and city officials provided an update on its progress during a meeting in late June.

“The map is a tool for pedestrians to use to make their own suggestions and see what other people have suggested,” said Jose Navarro, engineering aide for the city of Madison. “The city can use it to see what citizens are saying so they know how to respond to them.”

From July 19 through 26, nearly 200 girls ranging from kindergarten to recent high school graduates will be learning about fingerprinting, cutting apart cars and propelling from buildings at CampHERO.

Partnering with Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland, CampHERO allows young girls to learn what it is like to work in protective services, which are career paths girls are not normally encouraged to pursue. It spans a week and immerses the campers in hands-on activities.

When Emily Jones* returned home from serving in the Army, she turned in her DD214 discharge form and left the building with a new title: veteran.

This was in the 1980s, and although she didn’t realize it at the time, this would be the beginning of a lifelong battle.
