United Way of Dane County and Hy-Vee are partnering to offer free flu vaccinations in October and November.

United Way will cover the cost for uninsured individuals to get shots. Accepted insurers include Medicare, WI Medicaid, BadgerCare, Unity, GHC, Dean, and Physicians Plus.

For a six-month season, Chrysalis Pops employees sell popsicles out of the Icicle Tricycle—a tricycle cooler—at local farmer’s markets and community events alongside the program’s slogan: “Pops with a purpose.”

United Way of Dane County will begin its 2017 fundraising campaign on Aug. 22 when it hosts a kickoff event at the Madison Mallards’ Duck Pond.

The late-summer event will be the first of the organization’s “Season of Caring” initiative, and the nonprofit is hoping to bring together more than 500 volunteers at Warner Park, according to a United Way of Dane County statement.

Even in the middle of the summer, the Simpson Street Free Press South Towne newsroom is busy with students learning and writing. The newsroom is filled with resources for students—from a library full of sources , to the volunteers who help students revise their articles.  

The newsroom exemplifies SSFP’s mission to actively help students learn in out-of-school time in a high-impact, effective fashion.

The Madison Community Foundation announced Wednesday their third of 12 major gifts totaling roughly $1 million as a part of the organization’s 75th anniversary celebration, revealing their latest initiative from the rooftop of the Madison Children’s Museum.

The setting of the announcement afforded those in attendance a front-row view of the focus of MCF’s latest initiative: the Wisconsin State Capitol. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the government building.

In July 2016, the Wisconsin Innocence Project (WIP) — a program focused on exonerating individuals who were wrongly convicted of crimes — launched the Wisconsin Latino Exoneration Program (WLEP) in an effort to free incorrectly imprisoned Latino individuals. 

The WLEP is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice that will allow the program to take on cases where DNA testing could help prove the innocence of Latino individuals, according to Maria De Arteaga, a staff attorney working with the WLEP.

A public hearing on the proposed bus stop changes on Monroe Street was held last Wednesday evening in front of the Transit and Parking Commission, giving community members an opportunity to voice their opinions.

The hearing was called to gauge public concern about Metro’s proposal to consolidate and shift the bus stops along Monroe Street, resulting in a reduction of 6 stops along the corridor.

From its origins in Sun Prairie to its chapters in states from California to Connecticut, Box of Balloons delivers birthday parities to children in need across the country.

Nicole Moll, originally from Poynette, Wisconsin, founded the non-profit organization nearly four years ago to provide birthday parties to children experiencing poverty, according to her statement on the organization’s website.
