The 2016-2017 annual report of the Madison Metropolitan School District shows gains in reading and math comprehension, as well as progress for English language learners, but lags behind in building personalized pathways to college for high school students.

Even in the middle of the summer, the Simpson Street Free Press South Towne newsroom is busy with students learning and writing. The newsroom is filled with resources for students—from a library full of sources , to the volunteers who help students revise their articles.

The newsroom exemplifies SSFP’s mission to actively help students learn in out-of-school time in a high-impact, effective fashion.

A young girl walked into a Madison public high school one Monday morning this spring. Her hair had been done professionally, her nails were polished and manicured. She was sporting a new, expensive outfit, and she spoke to her friends about the hotels she had stayed in that weekend.

From July 19 through 26, nearly 200 girls ranging from kindergarten to recent high school graduates will be learning about fingerprinting, cutting apart cars and propelling from buildings at CampHERO.

Partnering with Girl Scouts of Wisconsin-Badgerland, CampHERO allows young girls to learn what it is like to work in protective services, which are career paths girls are not normally encouraged to pursue. It spans a week and immerses the campers in hands-on activities.

Michael Dando knew at a young age that he wanted to be a teacher.

But throughout his early education, he often found himself in trouble for being too loud and asking too many questions.

“I loved learning; I didn’t like schooling. I liked questions; I didn’t like being told answers,” Dando said. “And that still informs my practice today.”

When his tenth grade teacher let him teach a class, he knew he had found his calling.
