Food carts scattered about Capitol Square mark the coming of warmer weather in Madison. But where do these street vendors go when Wisconsin winter make serving food outside nearly impossible?

For El Grito Taqueria, a food cart known for its seasonal menu and innovative use of local ingredients, the off-season is a time for inspiration and rejuvenation.

Joshua Barraza and Matthew Danky, the Wisconsin-native team behind El Grito, spend their winters traveling for the betterment of the business.

While vegetables have not always been a kid’s best friend, REAP is trying to change that by normalizing and exposing kids in the classroom.

Through the Farm to School program, the REAP Food Group brings fresh, local and sustainable foods directly to the Madison Metropolitan School District’s classrooms. Natasha Smith, the Farm to School program director, said for many students they would not have access or exposure to the fresh produce without the various programs.

In early January, REAP Food Group welcomed a new executive director, focused on engaging citizens of Madison to work on farm to school programming and local, sustainable produce. 

Helen Sarakinos, the executive director of REAP, joined the team after working with the River Alliance of Wisconsin for many years. Most recently, she was the policy director, striving to keep people engaged in decision making.
