Running for Seat 3 on Madison Board of Education

“We need to focus on educating the whole child to close gaps and create safe schools.” Carusi said. “The achievement gap is the most important issue we face as a district...In order to address it, we have to serve every child in every school every day.”

The solutions she would like to focus on as a school board member include small class sizes, creating inclusive and culturally relevant curriculum, investing in a district wide plan to ensure mental health professionals are present in schools daily, and hiring and retaining staff of color.

“It is super easy to talk broadly, but one thing that drives my candidacy is concern with evidence-based solutions to close gaps,” Carusi said.

A sometimes overlooked part of improving school culture, Carusi suggests, are providing better food options.

“It is an equity piece to both give students better food and enough time to eat it, especially for those who get most of their food at school. I feel like school lunch isn’t something people take serious but it is an equity piece because meals foster socialization too.”
