April 2019 Backyard Heroes

Community Shares, a partner of Madison Commons, recognizes two volunteers each month. The volunteers come from Community Shares' member groups and are selected for their service to the community and to community issues.

Judy Skog, Sierra Club Foundation - John Muir Chapter

Judy Skog is a founding member of the Tar Sands Team, a joint effort between the Wisconsin Chapter of the Sierra Club and 350-Madison to halt the expansion of pipelines that threaten Wisconsin’s land and water. The Tar Sands Team is working to protect Wisconsin’s water, land and air.

Skog brings positive energy, hopefulness, humor and adorable pictures of her grandchildren everywhere she goes. She is known for bringing homemade treats to share with everyone or starting a chant or song to keep spirits high, no matter how long the trip.

Community Shares is grateful for all the work Skog does.

Karen Lee Weidig, Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired

Karen Lee Weidig has shared her talents with the Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually Impaired clients for nearly 20 years. She has helped people with vision loss, learn Spanish, edit books, get from place to place, and even exercise a dog guide.

The Wisconsin Council of the Blind & Visually impaired says Karen is a friendly face at many Council events as she greets guests or assists with refreshments. Community Shares feel that Weidig deserves to be a Backyard Hero for all of the great work she is doing.
